Manheim Farm Show Livestock Management Guidlines

I. GENERAL
All decisions on rules will be made by the livestock committee and the decisions will be final.
Please see Livestock Chart for summary of all dates and entry information.
Please see animal department for guidelines specific to each species.
All exhibitors must be present when animals are shown and sold unless prior permission is granted.

II. Exhibitor Eligibility
Youth exhibitors must maintain an approved 4-H/FFA project book.

BREEDING:
Beef, Sheep, Goats and Pygmy Goats
Open to youth who are members of any Lancaster County 4-H livestock club or FFA Chapter.
Dairy
Entries are limited to exhibitors from Lancaster and Lebanon counties, with priorities given to Lancaster youth exhibitors and filling the remaining openings first from Lancaster and then Lebanon open exhibitors.

SALE ANIMALS and ALL BEEF CATTLE:
Any youth who is a member of a Lancaster County 4-H club or Lancaster FFA chapter and resides or attends school in Manheim Central, Donegal, Hempfield, Elizabethtown, Manheim Township, Warwick is eligible to compete. Youth exhibitors must maintain an approved 4-H/FFA project book.
A three (3) percent deduction will be made on all selling exhibits. This deduction will be used for advertising, equipment and buyer appreciation.

III. Livestock Health Information
As of printing time these are the rules from PDA. They are subject to change.
All animals must be free of infectious and contagious diseases and a statement of this printed on the CVI (certificate of veterinary inspection which requires a veterinarians signature) is required on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. Animals appearing unhealthy upon arrival may not enter the exhibition grounds. Animals showing sign of illness during the Farm Show will be dealt with on an individual basis in accordance with the Show Ring Code of Ethics with the guidance of a veterinarian.
All animals must bear unique permanent identification and/or official ear tag.

All drug and vaccine label directions must be followed, including but not limited to milk and slaughter withdrawal periods, and the final dose of vaccine must be administered at least 15 days prior to entry into the exhibition.

An Animal Owner of Caretaker’s Verification of Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship form must accompany every species of animal exhibited, and must be presented upon arrival at all exhibitions in Pennsylvania.

All Certification of Veterinary Inspection papers (health papers) shall be dated March 1st or after.

Sheep and Goats ALL sheep and goats must bear an official USDA/APHIS scrapie ear tag to be exhibited at the Farm Show. Goats having a registration tattoo and a scrapie premise ID with a registration certificate are exempt from this requirement. Sheep from flocks on the Voluntary Scrapie Program must bear the official ear tag, tattoo, or electronic ear implant.
Sheep: A statement that the flock of origin was inspected and found free from symptoms of infectious or contagious disease and has had no know exposure to or history of scrapie must be documented on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health papers).

Cattle Vaccinations against the following diseases are required: IBR and P13. Individual official animal identification is recommended. Official ID includes a USDA issued metal eat tag of a Radio Frequency Identification tag. FFA or 4H leaders will ear tag all animals.

Dairy

Swine Individual animal ID is required in the form of official ID (herd tattoo in combination with an ear notch), state issued metal ear tag, Radio Frequency ID tag or a plastic stamped ear tag.

IV. Entering Procedure
All livestock entries must be mailed to committee chairperson by time indicated on entry form found in each animal department. Entries must be postmarked by September 10th.

  • NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
  • New exhibitors should register for a number at the Farm Show office prior to entering their livestock. Office opens at 2:00 p.m. Sunday. If you have an exhibitor number from past years you do not need to stop at the office UNLESS your address, name or phone number have changed.
  • Please refer to Livestock Exhibition Information Chart for specific times species can be entered.
  • Two parking passes per family will be distributed at check in time.

  • All exhibitors will be directed to enter the Farm Show grounds via Farm Show Lane Sunday evening. One vehicle at a time will stop at the Commodity Tent. Exhibitors should have the following forms ready to hand in upon arrival at the Farm Show:
    1. Swine PQA certificates-swine exhibitors only.

    2. Health Paper : Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (signed by the veterinarian).

    3. Veterinary Client Relationship Form Exhibitor will need a separate form for every species entered. This form does not require a veterinarian signature. All animals must be listed by their ID number.

    4. Show Ring Code of Ethics form Parents and exhibitors need to read and sign this form.

V. Livestock Good Housekeeping
Each species will have a sponsor for their respective Good Housekeeping Award.
The Good Housekeeping award will be announced at the beginning of each species at the Youth Livestock Sale.
All equipment, feed and show boxes must be kept in designated areas.

  • Purpose of Good Housekeeping Award
    • Keep animal areas clean and safe
    • Educate the public about the livestock being exhibited
    • Promote the agriculture and livestock industry
      • Award Selection Criteria
        • Cleanliness of animals and animal preparation area
        • Cleanliness of bedding and aisles
        • Exhibitor cards and awards displayed with animal(s) all week
        • Feeder(s) kept clean and feed properly stored
        • Water kept fresh and clean
        • Equipment kept neat and in tack box when not in use
        • Promotion of livestock industry to the public
        • Promotion of 4-H and FFA organizations
        •Consideration to fellow exhibitors

VI. Farm Show Grounds
The management will take every precaution in its power for the safe preservation of stock and articles on exhibition after their arrival on the grounds. However, management will not be held responsible for any damage or accidents that may occur during the week.

Any person(s) found stealing, damaging or injuring exhibits will be dealt with according to the law.

Each exhibitor will be solely responsible for any loss, injury, or damage done or arising from any animals exhibited by him or her if such negligence on his or her part. Any individual, spectator or patron handling animals without the consent of the owner is liable for all damage or injury done to themselves or animals.

NO youth exhibitors or non-exhibitors will be permitted to stay overnight on the Farm Show grounds. Dairy exhibitors who will be preparing dairy cattle the night before the show must be accompanied by an adult.

Tobacco use by youth exhibitors (regardless of legal age to purchase tobacco) on Farm Show grounds is PROHIBITED! Any exhibitor who is found breaking this rule will forfeit all premiums. Repeated offenses will be handled on an individual basis by the livestock committee.
